Timeline Project Goes Live!

Nearly a year after I joined the project, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. As part of the celebration, today we unveiled an interactive, multimedia timeline which I have been project managing for the past year. Very excited to have this big project not just under my belt, but living large on the CHASS webpage!

New Year, New Honors

Much has been shaking down here in Raligh, NC! For starters, it looks like I will have the chance to stretch my teaching wings, as it were, this summer and tackle a section of ENG 331: Communication for Engineering and Technology. Should be very exciting, and a great chance to reconnect with my old days in the contracting industry.

Last semester, I was also voted the incoming Secretary for the Communication, Rhetoric and Digital Media Student Association, and most recently I was offered the position of Graduate Assistant Director to the First Year Writing Program for the 13/14 school year. Highly excited for all these new things to try!

First Graduate-Level Lecture

Tonight, I gave a guest lecture for Dr. Nick Taylor’s “Gaming and Social Networks” class. I talked on the history of non-digital wargaming, RPGs, card games, etc. It was well received, and the character creation/speed-run of a gaming session went great.

Big Week for Meetings

Quite the week this time around! On Monday I presented my intended platform for the CHASS 50th Anniversary Timeline, and after an hour and a half of questions and planning, the entire committee expressed support, and most of them have individually told me that I did a great job. Always nice to hear! So, TimelineJS it is!

Today marked the first meeting of the newly-named SWITCH, a student/faculty coding group dedicated to games and humanities computing. Very exciting!

I was also approved for a new apartment, but that’s as may be.

Committee Beginnings

Today, Dr. David M. Rieder agreed to not only be a member of my dissertation committee, but to take on the responsibilities and labors of committee chair and adviser. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work more closely with Dr. Rieder in the coming years as I develop my committee, plan of work, reading list, exams, and finally dissertation.

Back in the Homeland

A successful presentation at this year’s Midwest Conference on Literature, Language and Media. Fellow panelists had intriguing topics, and we had a good discussion after with the audience and moderator. A lot of good people and things, and got to see some good friends from the old stomping grounds.

Nintendo Jukebox Rides Again!

Exciting news! One of the projects that Wendi, Shaun and I worked on for class last semester is on display at Duke University’s CHAT Festival. CHAT, short for Collaborations: Humanities, Arts, & Technology, seeks “to build up sustainable conversations within the community through this event, to seed the growth of collaborative, project-based work in the arts and humanities, and foster reflection on the implications of this kind of work for teaching, research, and public arts and humanities efforts.”

We’re very honored to be features alongside local scholars and artists, including NCSU’s own Dr. David Rieder, whose course we designed it for. If you get the chance to check it out, find our display at the Bryan Center Gallery, in the Von Canon gallery: Playing outside the cartridge: (re)Experiencing Nintendo.
